An electrical contractor can be an individual or a business firm that does work related to electrical systems. This includes but is not limited to design, maintenance and installation. There are three main types of electrical contractors. Outside electrical contractors, also known as line contractors work with the distribution lines. An inside electrical contractor does electrical work inside a property, such as outdoor lighting. An integrated building systems or Voice/Data/Video electrical contractor work with wireless networks, telecommunications and more.
Most states require everyone to obtain a license if they are supplying electrical services. This license makes it possible for the contractor to receive permits as needed and bid on projects. These licenses can be given to an individual or a business entity. These licenses are usually renewed every year. If they aren’t renewed, the license becomes inactive.
There is a difference between an electrician and electrical contractor. An electrician is a worker who specializes and is qualified to do tasks related to electrical systems. They have completed an apprenticeship and courses. An electrical contractor is the person or company that hires electricians. They must study longer and pass more exams than an electrician. Most of the time, both are licensed and insured. But an electrical contractor will always only employee licensed electricians.

Come to find out the main line connected to our main service box had fried and could have actually caused a fire. Thankfully it didn't. Around the time (10 am) we had a prognosis from Palmer at a reasonable non-emergency rate the other company called us back but we already had a resolution. They would have charged us $250 for a service charge far above what Palmer charged.
We found out from Duke that Palmer is one out of three preferred vendors and we were in good hands and many other companies would have charged a service call without ruling out them first. All this to say we are Palmer customers for life. I will also talk to Palmer about making their yelp say they have 24 hour service which deterred us from calling them first as yelp said they were closed versus the other company who obviously didn't really have emergency afterhours service.
